Wild Child Playspace - OAKLAND, CA
We worked closely with our client to help conceive of and and lead the design of this interactive children’s play space and art experience, which incorporates the work of many local artists & artisans. Children and their parents are literally transported by portals that take them into another fantasy world of interactive art, making and play. The project celebrates color, whimsy and scale for kids and their parents.
Project DESCRIPTION
The Scale Collective worked closely with our client to conceive of the overall idea of Wild Child and how to design and execute it so that the design fit closely with the project needs and design style we created. We developed a visual language for the project - using soft curves, color as a way finder and also as a way of experiencing different moods. The design of the project took cues from greats in the mid century movement like Verner Panton - who is known for his magical use of immersive color. The art + learning room is warm neutrals and devoid of all color except for the color coming in through the windows from warm to cool tones which changes depend on the time of day and year. The play area is drenched with colors of blues, greens, and pink and purple tones to add a grounding sense of calm into the fun lively space. So many wonderful elements here from the portals into the spaces, the curved ball pit inspired by the terraced rice patties in south Asia to the cozy room — an all mauve toned room with a James Turrell inspired sky space experience — make this small space a place for curious little children and their parents a place to wonder, dream, learn and grow.
